Navy Ball - in Photos

Wow. The Navy Ball returned with a bang. What a night. Nearly 100 Alums from all decades came back to campus for a night of fun, frolic and a few misty moments. *sniff* The night highlights included a video montage by the class of 1970 and recollections of this great crew by Coach Bill Sanford. A buffet dinner and a night on the dance floor (followed by assorted after parties) completed the evening.

Huge props and major thanks to SARA Board Member Chip Gibson who put this night together.

If you were at the event and have photos to share, please send them to me at tracyrsmith123(at)gmail.com and I'll post them. THANK YOU to Tom Darling for these photos below....

Class of 1988 Boat Dedication

5 members of the SU class of 1988 were on hand this past weekend for the ceremonial christening of the new Hudson 8+ named in their honor.
Gordon Bain, Joe Kieffer, Rich MacNamara, Eric Heitman and Bob Price did the duties, with a little help from Otto the Orange.
Thank you Class of 1988!

Doctor Bruce Chamberlain Inducted into the SARA Hall of Fame

It was a huge honor for SARA to induct the SARA Co-Founder Dr. Bruce Chamberlain into the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association Hall of Fame on Saturday (Nov. 6).

Doctor Chamberlain's family and friends gathered for this ceremony at the boathouse on a chilly (and briefly snowy) Liverpool morning. SARA Board Member and Orange Oar Editor John Nicholson presided over the ceremony.

We are grateful for the beautiful reflections and anecdotes about Dr. Chamberlain provided by the venerable Bill Sanford. Longtime SARA Board Member and Dr. Chamberlain's friend Bob Donabella had the honor of presenting the Award.

A beautiful tribute to the one that started it all....

Thank you Dr. Chamberlain for your unwavering support of Syracuse rowing.

Mark of the Oarsman II

Ok, all you alums. We are now ready to get your insights, inputs, and information for the new edition of Mark of the Oarsman.

John Nicholson and I are tasked with writing the book, but think of us more as facilitators - you have the memories, the pictures, the stories and opinions. And that's what's going to make Mark II a great read.

Here's what you need to do.

Send me an email - jpadudaAthealthstrategyassocDOTcom and I'll send you the poop on how to contribyoot.

Our fearless leader Tracy has given us the directive to have the draft completed by September 1, 2011. That's ten months away, and if it isn't done by then I'm going into the Witless Protection Plan.

So, shoot me an email and we'll get on it. It will be easy, fun, and painless - and you'll get props in the foreword as a contributor, too.

We can't do it without you.

Sheila Roock ('85)....Renaissance Woman

Hard as it may be to believe, Syracuse rowing alums' talent extends to activities other than those involving propelling a shell at warp speed.

Case in point - Sheila Roock (aka "Shelly Rock") - class of 1985.

If you're in Syracuse for the SARA Alumni Weekend, why not stop by to see Sheila who will be a featured exhibitor at the Syracuse Art Mart, opening Friday, November 5. The Art Mart is an art and fine crafts show of nearly 50 artists, selling original paintings, photographs, jewelry, pottery, and more.

(personal note: Sheila's beautiful ceramic bowls greet me and my cereal each morning. They are true works of art.)

The Opening Reception is Fri., Oct. 5 4pm – 7pm, but the sale starts at 11am. Regular hours are 11am-4pm Mon – Sat.

Location:
The Art Mart takes place in the Greenhouse at City Hall Commons:
201 E. Washington Street in Downtown Syracuse - (Adjacent to Hanover Square, near where Washington St. meets Montgomery St.)

Questions or to contact Sheila, call 215-514-4457.

The Stangel Report....from Stangel

(lifted from the Oklahoma blog)

Today was the third day of World Championship racing and our first day to race. On the first day of the event they only ran 5 races, as the wind that had been held at bay finally came into town and with some force. We had practised in the conditions and needless to say it was a bit dicey for us in small boats but the bigger boats seemed ok. It was a bit tricky docking because you were in a direct cross of white caps that would either slam your shell into the dock or blow you too far on the downwind side for a coach to catch you without some athletic movements. After Sunday though racing has been run very smoothly with the regatta sending all of Sunday and Mondays racing down, with one minor slip up in the starting signals in the final adaptive race. Needless to say everyone was a little impressed.

As for today we went out for a light swing row before racing started, which is pretty easy here because races start pretty late in the day so you don't have to wake up early (there is a reason for this, we were told that racing cannot happen between 9-10 because the sun is directly opposite the finish line tower and it messes up the high speed camera for close races). By the end of the day everyone would have raced to one degree or another with the final heats starting today. Our race went down just after 11:15 and conditions were fast with a solid tailwind blowing and not much chop, if it weren't for the cold water there would be world best times for sure. We had a decent race with a fast start, it is interesting racing just for lanes with the outcome not having much significance except maybe psychological and maybe with lanes depending on who you talk to. With that being said it was tight racing - all crews were within 3 seconds and us on the back end of that. On to Saturday and the real race where everyone will be faster.

The rest of the week has been the talk today with the weather predictions coming in that Thursday and Friday might be really bad with a major storm supposedly coming. We might see some schedule adjustments to compensate for this, but there are about 100 different responses to what that might be. Team USA is still in high spirits after racing, with everyone still in the mix and looking to keep showing improved speed as semis and finals start working their way forward.

I hope everyone is doing well back home in the USA. It still feels a bit odd that worlds are after HOCR let alone Halloween.

On to faster times

Justin

Men's 2+ results

Justin et al finished a very close 4th in their 'heat', about 1.7 seconds out of first.

there are only 4 2+'s in their race, so this 'heat' was just to set lane assignments for the final. Overall, they were first off the line, and competitive throughout.

stay tuned for more info on the event likened to doing dead lifts for seven minutes...
